My name is Peter Mallory, and I am researching a new four-volume,
2,300-page comprehensive history of how the world’s rowing techniques
have evolved over the last two centuries since the sport of rowing was
born.
History is the collective memory of a culture. They say there’s nothing new under the sun, and
that’s especially true in the sport of rowing. The questions we ask today were already being
asked and answered before 1830! There is so much wisdom and passion bound up in the
hopes and dreams, the accomplishments and failures of the brave men and women who have
pulled oars for recreation or sport since the 1700s. They form our rowing heritage. I am writing
my new compendium to tell their stories before they are entirely lost in the fog of passing time.
The suggested titles so far include:
The Sport of Rowing, A Comprehensive History
Stroke of Inspiration, 200 Years of Rowing History
Easy Speed, 200 Years of Rowing History
Different Strokes, 200 Years of Rowing History
Catch to Finish, 200 Years of Rowing History
Rowing, Past & Present
Rowing Styles, The Complete Work
Survival of the Fittest Stroke, 200 Years of Rowing Evolution
What do you think? Whoever comes up with the final title will get a free copy.
Beginning in August 2006, excerpts of this book began appearing. More
recently, additional excerpts have begun appearing on an Italian and a British website.

I encourage you to visit these websites and respond back to me with comments, additions, corrections, agreements,
disagreements, additional anecdotes, whatever strikes you. I will respond to every email and acknowledge you in the finished
text. My book contains the words of the rowing community more than my own, and that is how it should be.
I am at an exciting milestone in my project. The writing is finally finished! All that is left is to give
anyone and everyone around the world, athletes, coaches and members of the rowing community, the
opportunity to review what I have read and offer comments, corrections, suggestions, agreements,
disagreements, alternative explanations and opinions, etc. I will travel to Lake Karapiro in November,
2010 to speak to athletes and coaches, and I am finalizing my plans to attend the World Rowing
Coaches’ Conference in London in January, 2011 for the same reason.
Time is running out for me to locate more films, contact more people, but I am still looking. My wish lists are on another page of this
website. So let me know if you would like to get involved. Check out the above websites and read the excerpts. Look for me at the
two upcoming events. This is a community project, and I really value your participation.
